How to Play & Chess Guide

Whether you are learning the fundamentals or mastering advanced game strategy, this guide covers everything you need to know about chess and the unique gameplay mechanics of One Chess.

1. The Objective of Chess

Chess is a two-player strategy game played on an 8x8 grid (64 squares). The ultimate goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent’s king. Checkmate occurs when the king is under direct attack ("in check") and has no legal moves to escape capture, block the attack, or capture the attacking piece.

2. Piece Movements and Values

Piece Relative Value Movement Pattern
King (♔/♚) Invaluable Moves exactly one square in any direction (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally).
Queen (♕/♛) 9 Points Moves any number of unoccupied squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
Rook (♖/♜) 5 Points Moves any number of unoccupied squares vertically or horizontally.
Bishop (♗/♝) 3 Points Moves any number of unoccupied squares diagonally along squares of its assigned color.
Knight (♘/♞) 3 Points Moves in an "L-shape" (two squares in one direction and one square perpendicularly) and can jump over other pieces.
Pawn (♙/♟) 1 Point Advances one square forward (two squares on its first move) and captures one square diagonally forward.

3. Special Chess Rules

4. How One Chess Works

One Chess introduces a fun, randomized format designed to test pure intuition and tactical adaptability without opening preparation bias:

🎲 Randomized Colors: You are randomly assigned White or Black for each game.
📖 Master Openings: Games start directly from established master positions (such as the Sicilian Defense, Ruy Lopez, King's Indian, or French Defense), putting you straight into active middlegame play.
🤖 Mystery AI Strength: Your computer opponent's Elo rating is randomly calibrated from casual (800 Elo) to master strength (2400+ Elo). The opponent strength is revealed at the conclusion of the match!
⏱️ Surprise Time Controls: Matches feature randomized blitz and rapid time formats (e.g., 3+0, 5+0, 5+3) keeping games fast-paced and thrilling.

5. Quick Tips for Improving Your Play

  1. Control the Center: Strive to control the central squares (d4, d5, e4, e5) with pawns and active pieces.
  2. Develop Your Minor Pieces: Bring your knights and bishops into the game early before launching an attack.
  3. Keep Your King Safe: Castle early to protect your king behind a solid wall of pawns.
  4. Think Before Every Move: Ask yourself what your opponent's last move threatens before choosing your counterplay.
