Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about how One Chess works under the hood.

Is One Chess completely free to play?

+

Yes, 100% free! There are no paid tiers, no subscription locks, and no account requirements. Anyone can visit and play instantly on desktop, tablet, or smartphone.

How does the randomized engine work?

+

Our chess engine runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly. It is calibrated across 11 Elo tiers (1000 to 3000 Elo) using statistical FIDE blunder models and natural human thinking delays (1.5s to 2.5s) to provide an authentic over-the-board feel.

Why do games start from master opening positions?

+

Many players experience opening theory fatigue after playing the same 10-15 standard moves every match. Starting from 1 of 25 curated grandmaster positions skips the repetitive opening book and drops you straight into rich, dynamic tactical middlegames.

Is my gameplay data private?

+

Absolutely. One Chess is built on a serverless, privacy-first architecture. We do not store your game history in a remote database or track user identity. You can download your PGN notation at the end of each game to keep for your own records.

Can I play on my mobile phone or iPad?

+

Yes! One Chess is fully responsive across all screen sizes. For the best mobile experience, hold your smartphone in portrait mode to enjoy the full-width board and touch controls.
