The 25 Arena Start Positions
Every game starts from one of these positions. See each one on a board with the engine's evaluation, its preferred continuation, and the plans for both sides.
Sicilian Defense
The most popular and aggressive weapon against 1.e4. Black fights asymmetrically for the center, leading to rich, double-edged tactical battles on both flanks.
Ruy Lopez (Spanish Opening)
The crown jewel of classical chess. White pins Black's knight to put relentless indirect pressure on the e5 pawn, creating deep strategic maneuvering.
Queen's Gambit
A foundational 1.d4 opening where White offers a wing pawn to seize central dominance. Features classic clashes in the Accepted, Declined, and Slav variations.
King's Indian Defense
A counter-attacking defense where Black lets White occupy the center, then challenges it with ...e5 or ...c5 and a kingside pawn advance.
French Defense
A resilient and stubborn defensive structure. Black locks the center with ...d5 and strikes at White's d4 pawn base with ...c5 and aggressive queenside operations.
Caro-Kann Defense
Renowned for its granite-like pawn structure and painless light-squared bishop activation. Black accepts a slight space deficit in exchange for a sound structure.
Réti & Zukertort Opening
A subtle, flexible flank approach. Rather than occupying the center with pawns immediately, White uses fianchettoed bishops to exert long-range pressure on the center.
